LOOKING FOR HOLIDAY TREATS??
Come stop by the shop!!!

As you may or may not be aware, today and tomorrow are the last days to pick up treats for the holidays until January 4th.

All pre-orders were to be placed by yesterday, so we are no longer able to take any pre-orders for pickup today or tomorrow!

HOWEVER!...

We have completely overbaked everything, and there is tons of stock available at the store today. We even have some frozen apple pies available for $15!!!

Please come by and pick up a selection of the treats we have available for walk-ins!!

We appreciate that it is incredibly busy at this time of year, and that a lot of people forget to place their orders in advance, but we will not be able to make any exceptions for the next 2 days! So unfortunately, we will be unable to cater to any special requests!

As we said, there are TONS of treats available in the shop, so we look forward to seeing you!!

TODAY Friday 23rd: 10am - 6:30pm

Holiday baking is here!

It's that time of year again!

What better reminder that we are now into the winter season than waking up to a fresh layer of sparkly, falling snow? We have unofficially left Fall behind us (in what part of the world does winter not actually start until December 22nd?!), so we've finished off our pumpkin and maple products. Not to fear! We are rolling in the absolute biggest variety of treats that we have ever released at one time!!

Not only are we bringing out some of our classic holiday flavours, we are introducing entirely new treats, and a full line of holiday Take n' Bakes! We are using a lot of exclamation marks today because we are so excited!!

Here are the new seasonal cupcake flavours! Remember, these can be pre-ordered for a dozen of one flavour / $28.

Gingerbread Vanilla - a ginger spiced cake topped with a vanilla icing

Chocolate Orange - Our version of a Terry's Chocolate Orange! There are Miss Kate's mum's absolute most favouritest flavour we make.

Ginger Pear - A lightly gingered cake with chunks of pear mixed in and topped with a lemon ginger icing.

Cranberry Almond - An almond based caked with dried cranberries mixed in, with a swirl of almond icing and a cranberry on top!

Cafe Mocha - Our chocolate cake base with a coffee flavoured icing - a lovely pick-me-up!

Rocky Road - This flavour has become an instant hit... We take our chocolate cake out of the oven just before they're finished baking. Then, we put a Charmallow (Ottawa's local vegan marshmallow!) in the centre before putting them back in to finish baking. We top it off with chocolate icing and a walnut!

We have a brand new flavour for our classic nanaimo bars... This holiday season, we are offering
PEPPERMINT NANAIMO BARS!
Heck yes!!! Order a pan of these for $32!

Our new seasonal scone flavours are gingerbread and cranberry almond!

The return of our Holiday Take N' Bakes are here!!! We have so many different options for you this year. If you are new to our Take N' Bakes, here's the deal: We prepare the following desserts for you, and freeze them to be baked fresh when you are ready to have them! Please note, these are NOT pre-baked treats. Some of them will need to be thawed before baking, and we will provide you with proper instructions when you make your purchase! These are ideal for Christmas day or for the week over the holidays while we are closed.

Each Take N' Bake is $15 and will contain 8 servings; we will have some available for pick-up in store, but if you have a specific flavour in mind that you'd like, be sure to pre-order!

Triple Berry Crumble
Cinnamon Rolls
Gingerbread Scones
Cranberry Almond Scones

And, last but certainly not least! Our brand new product that will be available in all kinds of flavours soon.....

WHOOPIE PIES!!!!

These brand new treats are made up of two cakes, held together by ooey-gooey icing. They can be a little messy to eat, but that's half the fun!! We currently sell these desserts in two flavours:
S'Mores (pictured above), and Ginger Orange Blossom.
More flavours will be announced soon, so we will keep you posted!!

One more quick thing to address before I sign off for the day... Our holiday hours!

We are still open from Tuesday - Friday 11am - 4:30pm, and Saturdays 8am - 3pm. We are closed Sundays and Mondays... However, on Monday, December 19th, we are going to open our doors for our regular weekday hours (11am-4:30), because on Saturday, December 24th, we will only be open from 7am until noon. Please see below for our full holiday hours and closures!

Monday December 19th - Friday December 23rd: 11am - 4:30 pm
Saturday, December 24th: 7am - 12pm (noon!)
Sunday, December 25th to Wednesday, January 4th: Closed for renovations!!

That's right - we will be renovating our kitchen space over the holidays to help serve you better! We've listened to everyone's suggestions, and we are going to do our very best to make better use of our lovely bakery.

One last thing... you can now find our treats at a brand new cafe called Pressed, located very close to us on Gladstone!! Be sure to head there for a delicious lunch and follow it up with a yummy treat from your friendly neighbourhood Auntie Loo =)

Ok I think that is all for now... I will take a break from sharing so much exciting news!! I'm exhausted.

Hope everyone is staying safe and warm... we really didn't get that much snow, but I know everyone seems to miraculously forget how to drive as soon as the first flake touches the ground. So just be careful =)

Just wanted to take a sec to say thank you so so much to everyone who came out last weekend and made our events such a success. Our birthday is only a week away and we just can't wait! So, as promised, heres the details to our "Find Mattycakes" human scavenger / social networking contest!

When and How?
On Saturday October 15, at 11:00am, 1:00pm, and 2:30pm, A password will be posted to this blog, our facebook fan page and our twitter account .The password will be different for each of the times listed. You can increase your chances by joining our twitter feed or fan page and having it linked to your mobile device so you are alerted as soon as we update! Once you have your password, the first person to find Mattycakes and tell him the password will win an 8" 2 layer cake for FREE.

Reflecting on 2 years....

Sometimes I wonder where the time goes- it seems that only yesterday I was laying down tiles here with my Dad, interviewing cake decorators (talk about the stars aligning- right Kate?!) and wondering what the future would hold.
I don't think that in my wildest dreams did I ever envision amazing beautiful wedding cakes, a devoted staff I'm so lucky to have, and probably the nicest clients in the city. I'm getting emotional even thinking about it now. I'd like to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for making it possible to do what I love, be with people I love, meet new people everyday and getting to work with the BEST business people in this city. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Alright, off with the Steel Magnolias emotional stuff and on to the fun- I'm so so so excited for our Birthday Party this year I can hardly contain myself! we have so many cool things planned for you guys this year- and some of the $$$ raised at the events- thats right events - this year will be going to an amazing cause, the Westminster Pet Sanctuary.

We're packin' up and taking off! ... Just for a week =)

Hey everyone!

Hope you are all having fantastic summers. We know it's ridiculously hot out there, but (knock on wood) we've been relatively lucky so far. Not sure how we've managed, but we haven't melted just yet... we're still holding up next to an oven that's on all day in an old building that retains heat like there's no tomorrow!

I'm just putting up a little note to let everyone know that...

We will be CLOSED from August 7th - 14th!

We're having a little bit of a vacation, and giving the bakery a little bit of a rest. So please note that we will NOT be able to take any special orders for these dates. Our treats will be found at our wholesalers starting on August 15th, and our retail hours will resume on August 16th.

So make sure you come on by beforehand and load up on treats in case you go into withdrawal while we're away!!!

Hey everyone!

Long time no post! I know, I know... we used to be so good at posting on a very regular basis. We have been so incredibly busy, that we have difficulty finding the time to get on here! Which, of course, is fantastic. The wedding season is fully upon us, so I will be in the zone, decorating away... In the meantime, we are having a brand new website designed for us, which we are sure you will love!!!

Yesterday's incredibly ridiculous heat (40 degrees Celsius? What?!) has reminded us that we would like to share with everyone the proper cake purchasing practices. When you order a birthday cake from us, please ensure that you have a reliable mode of transportation; one that is preferably air conditioned, and certainly one that has at least 4 large tires. For example... please do not strap it to the back of your bicycle. Once the cake has left the bakery, we cannot be held responsible for what happens. If it's raining, please bring a bag along - we do not distribute plastic bags, so it would be a great idea to bring along your reusable shopping bag to make sure the box doesn't soak through!

Also, cakes are almost always heavier than you'd imagine. Walking 6 blocks away with a 12" cake is much more difficult than it seems. So please, not only for your own sanity, but for ours as well, please arrange for a ride - save up your pennies for a taxi - hang out with us at the shop until the bus is due to show up! Don't leave the cake in your car. Get it home, and get it into your fridge within 20-30 minutes of pickup; especially on these ridiculously hot days. Humidity is a cake's mortal enemy.

So just to re-iterate; practice safe cakes and please organize sensibly to be picked up or to get a ride home once you have picked up the cake. We love you and we love our treats, and we want you to enjoy them to their fullest!

On a less preach-y note, this weekend you'll find us out at Idle Hands Spring into Summer Craft Sale! We were at the last Idle Hands Craft Sale in late 2010, and it was so fantastic. There are a ton of different vendors, and you will find some amazingly unique wares that you wouldn't have known about otherwise! So make sure you stop in to St Luke's Anglican Church at 760 Somerset St W on Saturday between 10am and 5pm, and say hi! We will be there with all kinds of treats for ya.

Then!! The week after THAT, we will be at Ottawa Explosion!! From June 16th-18th, some of Ottawa's most bestest bands will be playing in a variety of venues and locations; the best part about this event is trying to work out your schedule of what shows you want to go to, and how long it will take to get from A to B so you don't miss C, etc... It's always an awesome weekend of great music, great friends, and great treats! Yes - that's right - we will be there again this year with some deliciousness for you to snack on while checking out The White Wires (clearly) or whoever else you fancy! GUESS WHAT!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know of one of your favourite flavours' triumphant return!!!!!

STRAWBERRY LEMONADE IS BACK!!!

It's going to be available for sale as of tomorrow... you know what this means... IT'S PRACTICALLY SUMMER!!! Well, that's what we're telling ourselves here at Auntie Loo's Treats.

It's going to be an amazingly beautiful day tomorrow, so head on over and come see us and our delicious treats!!

Don't forget to make your way down to the Bronson Centre on Sunday to check out the Punk Ottawa Flea Market! I said it before, and I'll said it again... I missed it the first time around, so I'm excited to be able to go this time. I think it's going to be even busier than last time. Come down and buy some treats to bring home your mums!!! It IS mother's day, after all!!

For those of you wondering why there was no blog post today for Take the Cake, it's because I didn't even get to load the blogspot website before it was claimed from our Twitter and Facebook postings! Just for your curiosity, it was for an UPSIDE DOWN PINEAPPLE CAKE!!! Which means that it is one of our newest flavours ... yum yum!!!

Everything is Happening!!!!!!!

Why hello there!

I would like to formally introduce you to Bella!

Bella belongs to the wonderful friend of the bakery and avid food blogger, Tracey Gainforth. The photo, taken by Tracey's sister Sue Bowman, documented Bella's frequent return to stare at and covet our cupcakes that Tracey served over the Easter weekend!! As I write this, I just received another e-mail from her saying that not only was Bella entranced by the tray of cupcakes, it turns out she is also a vegetarian!! No wonder she wanted one of our cupcakes so much! Teehee =) Make sure you go on and check out Tracey's website The Lemon Kitchen, where she talks all things food-related. We've been interviewed by her before, and we always love when she makes a stop into the bakery. Thanks for sharing this with us, Tracey!!

In addition to sharing this ridiculously cute picture with you, I also wanted to remind everyone of the next 2 events we will be attending...

First, we will be at VegFest this Sunday, May 1st at the Glebe Community Centre. Not only will we be there with a plethora of treats for sale, we are also going to be judging an amateur baker vegan cupcake contest! Mandi is going to Take One For the Team and sample a couple dozen cupcakes with the rest of the panel of judges to decide on the winner... and the prize is fantastic!! The winner of the contest will have their creation featured at our shop and our wholesalers for a week! Oh yeah - and the spiffy vegan friendly gift basket is the icing on the (cup)cake... har har. Come check out the event; it gets bigger and better every year! The only problem is trying to figure out which booth I go to for lunch... so many options...

The following week on Sunday, May 8th, you will find us at the PunkOttawa.com Flea Market being held at Bronson Centre in Mac Hall. This is the 2nd time the event has happened, and as I missed it the first time around, I'm especially excited for this! On top of getting to spend the day with some of Ottawa's bestest people, proceeds from the event will be going to both punkottawa.com and the Westminster Pet Sanctuary. (You will recall from our earlier post that Kelli stopped in and introduced herself to us, and we fell in love with her). Some come on out, and support a great local music website and an amazing local pet sanctuary!!

I don't even want to think about what we have coming up after these 2 events... We have so much coming up, and the wedding season is about to hit full swing for us so it's only going to get crazier. We'll make sure to keep you up to date with what's going on, and where you'll see us around!!

See? I told you! EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING!!

Have you purchased a cinnamon bun Take n Bake??

If so, please see below for your instructions!

Thaw your pre-prepared cinnamon buns for 24 hours.

Allow to rise in your oven on minimum heat for 15-20 minutes.

Bake for 10 to 15 minutes at 350 degrees.

Just writing to give everyone a friendly reminder of our Easter Take n' Bake deal!!

Starting today, we will have a selection of our pre-prepared treats available for walk-in customers to purchase; please note we cannot guarantee what we have in stock. In order to ensure you get what your heart desires, be sure to place an order in advance!! We are still taking orders which will be available for pick-up from today until Saturday. (We are closed Friday!)

What is a Take n' Bake, you ask?

A "TnB" (that's cool, right?) is a dozen pre-prepared treats which you can take home and freeze until you're ready to eat! They need to be defrosted, then you bake them fresh at home for your Easter morning delight!! For just $20, you can choose which dozen of treats you would like... here are your options!!

OK Does anyone else feel like we've jumped straight from Winter into Summer? I know this cannot be, and that we have lots more Spring-like weather to come, but it is freakin' warm out there! That thunderstorm woke me up this morning like nobody's business. It was awesome.

Well, you know what time of year it is when Spring comes upon us... that's right... Easter!!! While the only eggs you'll find around our bakery are dancing bunny eggs (see above), we still have you covered for your delicious Easter treats this year! Here is what we are offering:

Pre-Order your Easter Take N' Bake packs today!
$20/12 frozen(pre-prepared) treats

Send us an e-mail or give us a call to place an order for this $20 Easter treat pack, available for pickup between April 19th and April 23rd. These packs contain one dozen of one kind of prepared treats which are baked fresh by yourself when ready to consume. They can be frozen until it comes time for you to pop 'em in your oven (allow time to defrost!). You will be provided with baking instructions when you pickup your pack. When ordering your Take N' Bake, you have the choice of:

12 Gluten Free Hot Cross Buns

12 Cinnamon Buns

12 Orange Blossom Anise Scones

Please note we are not able to mix n' match - each pack of 12 must be purchased separately if you wish to have more than one type of treat. Additionally, we WILL have some treat packs available in store for pickup, but we cannot guarantee that we will have the kind you desire, and we will sell them first come, first serve. So please pre-order your pack to avoid disappointment!

As mentioned earlier, each Take N' Bake pack will be 12 pieces for $20 - this is an even better deal than we had at Christmas, when we sold them 10 pieces for $20! It truly is an Easter miracle!!!

While we're talkin' Easter, it would be a good time for us to share with you our hours for that weekend. Please keep this in mind when placing your order for pick-up (i.e. We are closed Fridays and will fully book up for Easter Saturday!).

That's all I have to report for now! We are getting excited for Veg Fest coming up on May 1st, and we have just heard that the Punk Ottawa Flea Market is going to be on Sunday, May 8th!! I missed the first one as I was off gallivanting in England (such a tough life), so I was adamant about making it out to the 2nd one. Really looking forward to it... Did I mention I freaking love my job!?!

Westminster Pet Sanctuary

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to make a quick post to let you all know about someone we met today...

Mandi and I were workin' away at the bakery, when the loveliest woman named Kelli came in to the shop. She was so excited to be visiting us, as it was her first time in the bakery and first time trying our stuff. It turns out she does not live right in Ottawa, and her and her friends/family don't have much access to a lot of vegan foods. It was a joy to be able to share our treats with her, and she left the shop with one of everything to try!!

Before she left, however, she informed us that she runs the Westminster Pet Sanctuary. They specialize in caring for pets with special needs. This was a pretty fleeting visit, but in that short time, Mandi and I were so touched that we even welled up and I had goosebumps all over my arms. We cannot fully express how much it means to us that we are privileged to meet people like this on a daily basis. I told Kelli I would make sure her website was listed here, and I encourage you all to take a look at the site, and the work that is being done by this wonderful group of volunteers.

Here is a blurb from their Facebook group describing their organization:

We are a dedicated, hard working registered charity doing this out of nothing more than pure love of our furry friends. All of our members and volunteers are unpaid, so 100% of every dollar donated goes towards the critters care. We do this because all critters big and small deserve to know what love is and we do not mind showing them! Unlike some other shelters, our critters are not kept in cages. In order to better socialize them, they live as members of our familily or a foster family. By the time you adopt them, they will have had lots of contact with not only people, but other cats dogs, and various other creatures!. We are a 100% no kill Sanctuary for reasons other than if the animal is in unimaginable pain that they can never recover from a decision we do not take lightly, We have never euthanised an animal due to space limitations, money, treatable/managable illness, or age. If the animals do not find a home, they stay with us (although permanent spaces are limited). We do not receive any corporate sponsorship. Our mandate has always been to put any money directly to the animals, not a PR person, professional fundraising people, we instead rely on animal lovers who want to see their money go into animals who really need the help rather than expensive administration. Thank you for your consideration to support us and the work we do to save these precious souls.

We are a small Sanctuary and like it small although our expenses are huge! We ONLY takes in special medical cases. with top level Vet care, our goal is to get them better and then find a new forever home for them.

We ONLY work with SPCA'a, Humane Societies and Pounds for these "special animals" that have no voice. We do NOT take owner surrenders.

We genuinely hope we see Kelli again soon, even though I know it is bit of a trek for her to visit. We're so happy to have met her!!

Happy Spring, Everyone!!!

Yes, yes... I know it snowed on the first day of Spring, but what did you expect!? It's Ottawa! We all know that we still have another snowfall to come, which will appropriately occur on April Fool's Day. It's especially likely to happen this day because that's when I embark on a weekend-long vacation to Burlington, Vermont with Richard. Therefore, by all counts of logic, the weekend will be filled with icky and unpleasant weather. But a weekend away is a weekend away and I will not complain!! I am just preparing myself for the inevitable. (PS - if you've ever been to Burlington and have any ideas of where we should visit, please share!!)

So with Spring "allegedly" here, not only should we be expecting new and fresh beginnings of lovely weather and foliage, we can also expect new and fresh arrivals at the bakery! In the spirit of the season, we're introducing a BRAND NEW cupcake flavour which was launched this past weekend at the Go Green Expo!! For those of you who had the exclusive first tastes of our newest addition to the lineup, we thank you so much for the incredibly positive feedback we received. It's a new favourite of ours, and it appears as though it's a hit!! We already had to bring reinforcements to our wholesalers this morning!

Okay, okay, I guess you want to know what the flavour is, right? Well, brace yourselves! It's...

LAVENDER VANILLA!!!

This new cupcake is so light and refreshing, which is achieved by infusing the cake batter with ground lavender. This gives just a hint of floral flavour without being overwhelming. Topped with a vanilla icing, the flavours play off each other to create a soft and subtle Spring treat! A perfect delicacy to indulge in after an afternoon of splashing around in the puddles with your waterproof wellies!

Now, you didn't think a new flavour was the only thing we had to announce, did you?? After a lot of feedback, and a lot of consideration, we have decided to change our retail hours! For our one year anniversary, we conducted a survey on our website asking for your input on various aspects of the business. The majority of our feedback was regarding our retail hours, which you told us were inconvenient as Bronson is not fun to drive down during rush hour. As a direct result of this survey, we have decided to change our hours to be open earlier in the day.

As of March 29th, our new hours will be as follows:

Sunday & Monday: still closed!

Tuesday - Friday: 11am-4:30pm

Saturday: 8am - 3pm

This way, you will be able to come down on your lunch hour if you're working, and you won't have to brave the rush hour insanity that is Bronson!! So please remember to take note of these new retail hours, and come visit us! Don't forget: these hours are in effect as of March 29th.

Now, you didn't think a new flavour, and new retail hours, were the only things we had to announce, did you?? Well, ok - that's mostly it... except for one more mini announcement... keep your eyes peeled in the not-too-distant future (i.e. the summer!) for a brand new website!!! We are working with our wonderful designer to come up with a fun and interactive website that will represent us and the bakery. It's currently in the drafting stage, and we will have many meetings to come (aka: excuses for eating at Light of India and Zen Kitchen), in order to perfect it! If you have any ideas that you'd like to see, please don't hesitate to let us know; we have lots on the table right now, but there's always something we may have forgotten!

Also, thank you to everyone who came out to the Go Green Expo - it was a great event, and I think it may have been even busier than last year. We were so much more prepared this year, and it went very smoothly. Thank you to everyone who helped us out and pitched in! We couldn't have done it without you... and we'll never be too grown up to ask for help from our parents. We briefly took a bit of a breather when the event was over... until we realized there's less than a week to go until Rouge Ottawa!! Don't forget it's this Saturday - you should really pick up your tickets today! It's going to be an awesome night of fun, treats, and charity... can you really ask for anything more?

On that note, I'm going to go get my pyjamas on and settle in for (another) evening of Arrested Development. You wouldn't believe how many AD quotes were incredibly relevant to us this weekend... ("NO TOUCHING!" ... "Look at banner, Michael!!").

Hey everyone!

I think you're all doing a great job of willing the weather to finally warm up and melt some of this snow... I hear it will be going up to 15 degrees this Friday?! Keep up the good work, and we may actually see some grass this weekend!

Of course, now I've jinxed it and we're going to get 3 more feet of snow by the end of the week... sigh.

Here's just a quick note to say that...

Due to the Go Green Expo that is taking place this weekend (March 19th & 20th at Lansdowne), we will be unable to accept orders for birthday/specialty cakes.
Please note: orders for cupcakes & squares WILL still be accepted, and the shop WILL be open during our regular retail hours (Saturday 8am-2pm).

So if you aren't able to stop by Go Green, you'll still have access to our treats as per usual!

Go Green Expo!

As unbelievable as it is, the time for Go Green has come around again. Where has this past year gone!? It seems like only yesterday we were looking out over the crowds of people who were trying to work out what to make of the only table at the expo adorned in pink, with the business owner sporting a cupcake costume. What can I say? We stick out, and we're proud of it!

We're back again at Lansdowne Park from March 19th - 20th for round 2 of one of our biggest events of the year; 2 full days of like-minded businesses getting together to promote green living and sustainability. These events are what we live for! We thrive off of the opportunity to share our vision and our ethic, and what better platform than a venue filled with open-minded people looking to learn about and support green living?

This year, we're going to be selling pre-boxed treats with a special show price of 12/$25. There will be different assortments, and special Gluten-Free only boxes as well. Additionally, we are going to be selling smaller sample packs which will have an assortment of bite-size treats for $5. And, as always, we will have free samples being offered throughout the day. As part of the show's raffle draw, we will also have a gift certificate for a free 8" birthday cake up for grabs - stop by the information booth when you arrive to enter the draw!!

If you attended last year, you may recall that Mandi held a cooking demo in which she showed the audience how to make our walnut coffee cake (which is often lovingly referred to as "the man cake".) This year, make sure you head on over to the cooking stage at 1:30 PM to see Mandi demonstrate how to make our Gluten-Free Lemon Vanilla Cake! As always, the cake will also be free of dairy and eggs; people who attend the demonstration will get samples of the cake when the show is over.

We are well-prepared for the weekend ahead on March 19th-20th, as our team at the bakery has grown since 2010, and we've called in the Lunan clan for reinforcements. It will be a long 3 days, but it's worth every minute and we are genuinely so excited to be returning to such a fantastic show. We hope you will join us, and come out for a great event for the whole family!

Now... let's all do a song and dance to get Mother Nature to do HER part, and melt some of this snow so Ottawa is actually a little bit green by the time Go Green comes around... I know, wishful thinking, right? Sigh.

BERRY CARDAMOM BUTTERMILK CAKE

This newest addition to our selection of vegan treats was a brainchild of the one and only, Shane H. I was in at the bakery on Saturday for another weekend of wedding consultations, and had shown up feeling a little under the weather. Next thing I know, Mandi is cutting me a slice of what I believe she referred to as her "lunch, dinner, and breakfast since yesterday". (Don't quote me on that). Let me tell you... I love this cake. It has a rich texture due to the buttermilk (you know what I mean) but at the same time is light and not too heavy. The berries give a nice contrast to the density of the cake, while a light lemon icing lifts the overall flavour to make a ridiculously enjoyable treat.

Immediately after having a taste of the new cake, I sent Shane a text message that simply said, "I love you."

It's not that often that we come up with a flavour and immediately put it into rotation; there are usually adjustments that need to be made, or some playing around with the recipes... but in less than a week of its conception, our new berry cardamom buttermilk cake will be available at the shop as of Friday, February 25th for your enjoyment! Please see our retail hours as outlined on the right side of our page.

Gearing up!

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to post up a quick message as I just played around with the site a bit. We're gearing up for Mandi's big vacation - she's leaving her child in our hands! Talk about responsibility... whew! =) Seriously though, it's a vacation well-deserved and I'm happy she's going to be able to take some time off and leave everything running in her absence.

Anyway, what I really wanted to note was that you should take a little glance over at the right side of our page for a new addition... We've added a little pride flag! We want everyone to know that we are an LGBT-friendly establishment and we love each and everyone of you!

Think that's all to report for now... We have been so incredibly busy, and are already beginning to mentally prepare ourselves for the insanity that is the Go Green Expo in March. There's so much going on; hopefully either Mandi or I will have a minute to fill you all in very soon!

Also, I know this isn't the wedding page, but I just wanted to let everyone know that we are really booking up our consultations quickly... we're currently booked until the end of March, but I have a cancellation list going, and am now booking consults into April! Closing Early on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011!!!

Hey everyone!!

Just wanted to let you guys know that we will be closing early tomorrow (Wed, Feb 2nd) at 5:30PM. After an incredibly successful night at the Mayfair for the Kings Of Pastry screening, we'll be heading over for round 2 tomorrow night at 7PM! So if you missed it the first time around, not to fret! The film will be showing again, and we will be there with free samples and treats/tshirts for sale. In order to make sure we are there & set up in time to serve you all, we will have to close a little bit early - but I'm sure you understand!

I know it sounds like there's going to be a snowstorm on the way, but I think it'll be cleared up by then - and what better way to spend a snowy evening than with freshly baked treats and an amazing film?? You really do have to see this film - I definitely cried; Mandi had to pull my hands away from my face so that I'd actually watch... The crowd even erupted into applause a couple of times, so I know I wasn't the only one that was emotionally involved!!!

So pull on your boots, wrap up warmly, and come down to Mayfair tomorrow night (Wed, Feb 2nd!) for 7pm for your second chance to see this film while snacking on yummy treats.

Also, if you were there last night and you saw the preview for Four Lions which is being screened in March - mark that down! Go see it! Do it!

Cupcakin' Comrades vs Cupcake Cattiness

Hey there all,

As many of you know, we are proud to be a women owned business and love to network and work with other women owned businesses in Ottawa. When we started out, we were warned of the cattiness of the baking industry as a whole. At first, we made sure to tread lightly and cautiously around the other businesses that sell cupcakes and the like. However, over time we have learned that this simply is not true. The cattiness lies in the media, not the beautiful entrepreneurs we are privileged to work with every day here in Ottawa. With shows like "Cake Boss" and "Cupcake Wars" and the cupcake shop vs. mobile cupcake truck war that's been going down in Chicago, it's no wonder that people think that all of us baker gals/guys are bound to be at each others throats.

Over the past few weeks, we have had a few calls and emails inquiring about Ottawa's newest cupcakery, Thimblecakes, and how we felt about it as they are beside one of our vendors and offering similar options. We even had a journalist in here doing an interview with us who blatantly tried to get a nasty quote out of us regarding Thimblecakes, not to mention one aggressive patron who repeatedly asked us what we "were gonna do about it" via several phone calls and in person visits.

I don't usually get super personal on the blog, but I'm saddened by this attitude/stereotype/instigation so I feel the need to officially address this "issue". We are all local small businesses. Ottawa business is a village- there's enough room for all of us and we each have something unique to offer our customers. Here at Auntie Loo's we are delighted and privileged to work with Thimblecakes, Isobel's, The Flour Shoppe and Little Cakes as we each offer something unique to our customers. And if one of us has a customer who needs something we cannot provide, then we are happy to pass them along to a "Cupcakin' Comrade" who can. Also, please let it be known that I don't dislike people who share a similar vision to mine.

So here's my official statement Ottawa- all of us ladies enjoy successful business friendships- and if you're waiting to see us duke it out, it's just not going to happen. Heres a link that might satisfy your needs though. (Psst, enjoy the link- Olivia is a really good friend of ours!)

Hello all!

As promised, here's the new cupcake- Triple Berry Beet!

Now a lot of people ask where we get ideas from and how we get our recipes. Theres a little story behind this one- over the holidays, our Mama (who is one of the many ladies in our family who gave us love for the kitchen) clipped a recipe from this months Chatelaine for beet raspberry cream cheese cupcakes. After making several changes (getting rid of the dairy and egg products and finding appropriate replacements) and 5 or 6 batches of trials- we finally ended up with this. Airy and velvety all at the same time- very very much like a red velvet cake! We topped it off with some berry frosting (our baker Kristin commented on first taste "its like a smoothie!") and voila! You can eat a cupcake and keep your New Years Resolution to eat better!

Hello! We hope that you're all feeling as rested as we are right now and ready to enjoy 2011!
We had a great time catching up with family and friends, and dreaming up new products for this year.

Well, now that we're all done digging ourselves out, it's time for ANOTHER holiday contest here at Auntie Loo's! (This friday is the take the cake draw for the $100 in holiday pastries!)

We'd like you to meet Miss Claire, who has been with us for almost a year. Miss Claire is our resident Celiac, and is responsible for some of the Gluten Free Delicacies that you love! (Such as our GF danishes!)

This year, Miss Claire (pictured here with lil ol me!) will construct a Gluten Free (and vegan of course!) Gingerbread house that will be given away to one lucky Auntie Loo customer! the draw for the Gingerbread House will happen on December 22, and can be collected Dec 23 or 24. How do you enter this draw you ask? All you have to do is come to the shop in person and ask us to put your name in. No purchase necessary! Some come on down and win your chance!

What a Weekend!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Our customers are the best people in the city! Thank you SO much for opening your hearts and cupboards for "Holiday Eats for Holiday Treats!" XO
All the food we collected is pictured above, and will go to the Dalhousie Food Cupboard on arlington Ave, just around the corner from our shop here in the city.

On Sunday we partook in the first ever Locavore Artisan Food Fair- What a blast! The doors opened at 10, and as you can see from the picture above, we were nearly cleaned out by 12! Our wonderful neighbor Stone Soup Foodworks (SOLAR powered soup truck!!!!!!) was ladling out hot bowls of some of the most delicious soup we've ever had, and our dear friends Isobels Cupcakes and Siren Bakery dished out some of the yummiest eats in the city. What a fun day with fun friends, and we made lost of fantastic new ones too.

For those of you who arrived and were disappointed that we had no breakfast packs available for purchase- our apologies. The information in the paper was incorrect. The packs can only be ordered through the bakery as they need to be kept frozen until Christmas Morning so that the yeast doesn't come to life early! Please call or email to order- we are taking orders for all Christmas Pastries until Dec 22 at 6:30 pm.

Also, a new contest will be announced tomorrow! Stay tuned!

We decided to make the inside of the shop feel more merry- thanks to Matt's handiwork, we're officially a winter wonderland! I've put some picture on here of our work for you to check out. Thanks Matt! XO

Secondly- our newest Holiday offering is here! Auntie Loo's Christmas Morning Gift Pack! Buy one for yourself or someone you love- they'll travel well and bake up fresh because YOU bake them. Thats right!

For $20, you get 10 pieces- 6 of our signature gooey cinnamon buns and 4 of our scones. Keep the treats in your freezer until the day before, thaw on the fridge for at least 12 hours and then bake for 10 - 15 minutes for your own special warm and fresh Christmas morning treats!

Hey Everyone!

Well the temperature is dropping here in Ottawa, but things are just getting heated up here at Auntie Loo's! We're taste- testing all of our Christmas flavors out (I know, our lives are hard!) and gearing up for some events this month, as well as the usual craziness of life here at Ottawa's first vegan Bakery.

Thanks so much to all that came out for our first birthday, what a blast! We had a great time seeing old friends, making new ones, and stuffing our faces full of treats! Thanks again to Marie Danielle for the article about us! Did you miss it? Click here and read all about it!

Good Morning Everyone!

Well, its a rainy fall day here in Ottawa, but we're not going to let that get us down!
We're throwing on some Gene Vincent (always cheer us up) and baking away.
This morning I felt inspired by our store only exclusive cupcake- maple walnut, so I whipped up a batch of these babies- the maple oat scones!
Creamy and satisfying, they're the perfect match for your chai tea or dark roast.
I dropped some off at herb and spice bank around 8:30 this morning, so you can go grab one if you're in that area.
Tomorrow you can get them at Cafe Alt, herb and Spice Bank st. and Market Organics. Just so you all know- Cafe Alt and Herb and Spice Bank get scone deliveries monday through Friday, Market Organics gets them on Monday Wednesday Fridays.
Well, we're off to bake! Actually, we could use some company later this afternoon-

Hi there Everyone!

Well we had a fun weekend of working away! We repainted the front of the store in anticipation of our ONE YEAR BIRTHDAY PARTY on October 16th.
We were also privileged enough to be a part of the feast of fields, a great event that happens every year here in Ottawa where you pay a fee at the door and you eat your way through free samples from Ottawa's finest! We gorged ourselves at the Zen Kitchen tent (Great job as always Caroline and Dave!)and went back for seconds at The Table's tent. YUM YUM YUM. And then to top it all off, we were plunked beside our "business best friend" Brad Campeau of B. Goods Bakery and had to eat a whole bunch of mini cookies. It's a hard life I tell ya!

During our baking adventure today, we came up with a great new flavour. So great in fact, we've decided to keep this one to ourselves. The Great Pumpkin!

Its back! We couldn't wait any longer!

Our lovely yummy pumpkin spice cupcakes have returned for another season. Imagine a dense, soft apple/pumpkin combo on the bottom with a cinnamon, nutmeg, clove infused blend of pumpkin puree and sugar on top! As of tomorrow, you will be able to buy them from us here at the shop, or at your favorite retailer!

And speaking of pumpkin, we have a new kid to add to the family! Our new pumpkin spice scone is making its debut tomorrow at the shop, Market Organics, Cafe Alt and Herb and Spice Bank st. This is a yummy no too sweet blend of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves, pumpkin puree and organic flour, topped with a cinnamon glaze. Yum yum! We hope you will love it as much as we do! Try it with a chai or a soy cappuccino with cinnamon on top.

We're in high spirits today!
My cousin Lindsey is in town helping out at the shop this weekend. We have SO many weddings this weekend and its so cool to see the cakes come together.

Hi Everyone!

Just thought we'd let you all know what we have been up to this summer.

Its weddings weddings weddings! We've been having a great time preparing your cakes and cupcakes, thanks so much for ordering from us! Miss Kate is in the process of creating her wedding blog, so you can see what shes up to soon.

Mr. Shane has been busy cranking out those croissants that you all love so much. Thanks for all the support, we're so happy that you guys like em!

Miss Claire has an ace up her sleeve, stay tuned a brand new product will be announced later this week. Go Claire!

As for lil ol me, I've been going nuts doing paperwork and planning our first bithday party. Can't give you any details right now, but its gonna be this October and its gonna be crazy! If you were here last year for our grand opening party, you know what an Auntie Loo party is like.

On a more serious note, we are saddened to announce the passing of a dear dear friend of Auntie Loos, Davis Colbeck. Davis has been around since day one having our back, making us laugh, and demanding more gluten free treats. We will miss your smile so so much. RIP. We love and miss you.

New Promotion! You Take The Cake!!!!!!!!!

Hello all!

We’ve heard from some of you that you would like to see pre made cakes available for sale here at Auntie Loo’s. Feeling inspired by this, we have decided to have a special promotion this summer.
“You Take the Cake” will begin on Saturday July 3, and end Saturday August 27.
Heres how it works:
On Fridays, we will update our twitter , facebook and blog, announcing the flavour of an 8” cake that will be available for pickup on the Saturday for $30. (this saves you 5 dollars, the minimum pre order time of 48 hours, and the deposit). First one to email (no phone calls please!) auntieloo7 at gmail.com with the cake flavour as the subject header gets to pick up the cake.
This cake will be tastefully decorated by Miss Kate herself, ready for any occasion and can serve 6-8 adults.
But heres the exciting part! Once you come to collect your delicious cake, you will be asked to draw a card at random. During “You Take the Cake” one lucky person’s cake will be FREE!!!! And one other lucky person’s cake will be 50% off!
So be sure to check us out next Friday, when the first cake will be announced!

Vacation all I ever wanted......

The solstice has arrived! And on that note, we thought we would take a moment and let you know some very important dates for this summer. We're almost at our one year mark in business and we're so so excited about whats coming up this fall.. (can't tell you yet sorry! but we will soon!) We will be closed a few times this summer and just wanted to let you know!

We WILL be closed this Canada day: Thursday, July 1, but will be open as usual on Friday July 2.

We're also going to take a little rest this August: From Friday August 13 through Monday August 23 Auntie Loo's will be closed. We will all be having some r and r and recharging our brains to produce the yummiest vegan treats for you this fall!

The croissants are out at the distributors today! Throughout the week you can now buy them at Herb and Spice Bank, Market Organics or Rainbow Foods.
Croissants will only be available at the shop Saturdays, but you can place a private order anytime you wish Tuesday-Friday by emailing auntieloo7@gmail.com!

Lovely Lovely Week!

Hi Again,

It has been such a busy busy week for us here at Auntie Loo's! We made some new friends through our events at Victoire Boutique and Herb and Spice Bank st. and had a great time doing it! Thanks to these two amazing local businesses.
We also launched our croissants successfully today, and for those luck ones who got some, we hope that you enjoyed them!
Well, we're off to rest up now, we have the 8 hour skate next Saturday (read all about it- http://www.8hourskate.com/)
